Nonprofit Spotlight
Each year, BHS supports Colorado-based nonprofit organizations to truly be a beacon in the community at large through a one-time donation of $500 each.
Starting with our 2012 nominees, we will donate $1,000 twice each year.
In November 2010, BHS attendees voted for the four Colorado-based, nonprofit organizations, (please see below.)
We are delighted to recognize and honor one organization each quarter of 2011. We would like to thank each of you who participated in the selection process.
Congratulations!
2011 Non Profit Organizations:
1st Quarter American Council of the Blind of Colorado http://www.acbco.org/
(ACBCO) is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the independence, equality, and opportunities for all blind and visually impaired individuals in the state of Colorado. ACBCO's services help people to adapt to vision loss and to actively engage in the community. Our programs help to ensure independence and provide resources for those in need. All programs and services are provided at no charge as most of our constituents live at or below the poverty level. Grants, fundraisers, individual contributions and investment of funds from a bequest help support our work to assist the almost 300,000 blind and visually impaired. In 2009 ACBCO served over 4,200 individuals through one on one attention, education, distribution of adaptive aids and various other support.
Since 1978 Seniors' Resource Center (SRC) has delivered vital services in a ten county Denver metro area for older adults and developmentally disabled adults; providing direct services, valuable information and referrals that meet the needs of this vulnerable population. Each service and every program is focused on helping SRC clients, their families and caregivers, so that individuals can age in the place they call home. The percentage of the Denver metro population of older adults, age 55 and over will continue to greatly increase in the years ahead. SRC is committed to providing high quality programs that meet diverse needs for this growing population now and far into the future.
Since 1986, Mountain Peace Shelter has provided emergency shelter and 24-hour crisis hotline assistance for the residents of the mountain area of Jefferson County as well as all of Park County. Mountain Peace Shelter also has a unique SafePets program which allows families to bring their pets to our shelter so they are not injured or killed. The primary population we serve are survivors of Domestic Violence. Statistically, one in three women will experience domestic violence at some point in their life. Especially in our rural mountain community, resources are few and far between and having a local resource can literally make the difference between life or death. Mountain Peace Shelter is honored to be that resource for our community. Mountain Peace Shelter also has a very strong and active Mile Hi Church component to our organization and many Mile Hi'ers live in our mountain area.
